Drawing from Arnold Mindell, C. G. Jung, John Weir Perry, Waynelle Wilder, et al, this paper demonstrates how Extreme/Altered States are marginalized and pathologized in modern culture rather than accepted as potential dynamic visionary experiences – gifts for individuals, communities and the world. Many psychotic states hold seeds for unfolding powerful visionary experiences. Today’s tendency to pathologize Extreme States excludes emerging potent Shamanic gifts. Many visionaries have been labeled insane who were tremendously insightful and creators of new cultural thrusts. In times of cultural change, it is important that visionaries come forth to bring new direction/awareness. Because Process Work welcomes Extreme/Altered States, it is an important tool for these fresh visionary perspectives. Specific cases will demonstrate the richness of working with Process methodology including historical roots from which these methods emerged.
