Sheffield Cohesion Advisory Group in co-production with Sheffield City Council has developed a new approach to cohesion in the city. Businesses, council services, police, educational establishments, community and faith groups are developing action plans within a strategic framework.
- Cohesion is not undermined by diversity, but by deprivation and inequality.
- View our actions through a cohesion lens – aware that what we do can either build cohesive (trustworthy and sustainable) relationships, or undermine cohesion by lack of awareness.
Funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation we are now in the implementation phase.
We welcome the opportunity to share steps and learning. Particular challenges include: integration in areas with high level of deprivation plus rapid migration; rise in hate incidents following the Brexit vote; schools promoting integration vs attitudes at home; this in the context of a populist media that promotes a ‘single story’ about those ‘not like us’.
